The Red Tape Commissioner

Bus driver accreditation

Red tape issue

People who want to drive a bus have to:

  • obtain one heavy vehicle licence from VicRoads;
  • obtain a Taxi Services Commission (TSC) Commercial Passenger Vehicle Accreditation; and
  • undergo checks and training by bus operators to ensure fitness.

These processes contain significant duplication and delays. In addition, bus drivers report that the paper-based process to receive TSC accreditation can delay employment by two to six or more weeks, and is more lengthy if somebody has an interstate driver’s licence.

Current status

A proposal will be developed by regulators and the Department, in conjunction with the bus industry, to simplify these arrangements and remove red tape without compromising safety.
