Victorian Government intellectual property and data policies

Overview

The Department of Treasury and Finance is responsible the Whole of Victorian Government Intellectual Property Policy Intent and Principles (IP Policy) and the DataVic Access Policy.

The IP Policy is the State's framework for the ownership and management of its intellectual property (IP), and for its use of IP belonging to other parties. The IP Policy requires the State to grant rights to its IP in a flexible manner that maximises the public interest.

The DataVic Access Policy provides direction on licensing, pricing and management of Victorian government data so that it can be used and reused by the community and businesses. The DataVic Access Policy is implemented through the publication of datasets on the Victorian Government data directory website, data.vic.gov.au external site icon

Both the IP Policy and the DataVic Access Policy were endorsed by the Victorian government in August 2012. They apply to all departments and public bodies of the State.

DTF supports the Victorian public sector by providing training, preparing resources, and providing a point of contact for queries.
