Overview

The Victorian Desalination Project will supply up to 150 gigalitres (GL) of water a year to Melbourne, representing approximately one third of Melbourne’s annual water usage from a source that is entirely independent of rainfall.


The Victorian Desalination Project represents the largest public sector investment in water infrastructure in Australia’s history. It will supply up to 150 gigalitres (GL) of water a year to Melbourne, Geelong and, via other connections, South Gippsland and Western Port towns, with the capacity to upgrade to supply up to 200 GL in future. 

The project’s production capacity represents approximately one third of Melbourne’s annual water usage from a source that is entirely independent of rainfall.
