Information and Communication Technology Services

Business objectives

The Government Services Division (GSD) aims to ensure that the Victorian Government has the right information management and technology in place to best support its functions efficiently and effectively.

By managing our information and communications technology (ICT) efficiently more public funds can be directed to frontline services for Victorian communities.

Initiatives and strategy

Efficient Technology Services

GSD is implementing a number of initiatives aimed at improving government productivity and the efficiency of our corporate services.

The Efficient Technology Services program aims to standardise and consolidate common ICT services across all government departments and four agencies. GSD is working with CenITex , the Government’s shared service provider, to deliver the program.

ICT enterprise architecture

Enterprise architecture (EA) documentation is a blueprint showing the current and target states of a business. EA can identify new initiatives to improve business performance, and evaluate proposals for changes to the business and its ICT systems.

GSD is facilitating and supporting departments across government in the development of their own EA, and the formation of a whole of Victorian Government view in those areas where consolidation helps realise benefits and efficiency for government. This process also produces frameworks, policies and standards.

Information security

Information security is concentrated on maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of information under the government’s control, protecting it from accidental or malicious use, abuse, modification or release.

GSD provides a central point of contact for the whole of Victorian Government for the management of information security policy, standards, alerts and incident reporting. Central coordination improves the cohesion, strength and efficiency of security.

Information management

Government is largely a knowledge-based industry. The quality and availability of information impacts directly on the quality of decision-making and services government delivers.

GSD is facilitating a whole of Victorian Government program of work focussing on improved information sharing internally in government. This program aims to reduce costs and improve service delivery and business intelligence across government.

Policies, standards and guidelines

In order to realise the benefits of a consolidated approach, and reduce risk across government, GSD manages a range of ICT policies, standards and guidelines in the areas of:

  • data;
  • disaster recovery;
  • electronic forms;
  • environmentally sustainable ICT;
  • ICT network;
  • ICT procurement;
  • identify and access management;
  • information management;
  • information security; and
  • website management.
Access these policies and standards on the CIO website.
