Commonwealth review of Australian taxation
In May 2008, the Commonwealth Government announced a comprehensive review into most aspects of Australia's tax system including all Commonwealth and state taxes (excluding options that increase the rate or broadening the base of the GST). The Tax Review is due to report by the end of 2009 and is led by the Secretary of the Commonwealth Treasury, Dr Ken Henry.
The Tax Review covers the follow areas:
- the balance of taxes on work, investment and consumption;
- further improvements to the tax and transfer system;
- taxation of savings, assets and investment;
- the role and structure of company taxation;
- simplifying the tax system, including state taxes; and
- interrelationships with future emissions trading system.
The Victorian Government welcomes the Tax Review and supports its objectives to position Australia as a competitive economy and improve the quality of life of all Australians.
As state taxes are covered by the Tax Review, the Victorian Government lodged a submission to the Tax Review on 30 April 2009. A copy of the submission can be downloaded below.
