John Lenders MP is Victoria’s 50th Treasurer. Before assuming responsibility for the Treasury portfolio from the Premier, the Honourable John Brumby on 30 July 2007, he was the Minister for Education.



As Treasurer, Mr Lenders is responsible for the financial management of Victoria’s $34.9 billion Budget sector, which represents over 13 per cent of the State economy.

The Treasurer’s primary responsibilities are:

  • preparation and delivery of the annual State Budget;
  • revenue collection for the State of Victoria, including stamp duty, payroll tax, financial institutions duty and land tax;
  • borrowing, investment and financial arrangements to hedge, protect or manage the State’s financial interests;
  • promoting economic growth across the State of Victoria; and
  • providing investment and fund management services to the State and its statutory authorities.
