Medical assessments – commercial bus drivers

Overview

Red tape issue

Commercial bus drivers indicate that they must go through up to three separate medical assessments for:

  • a heavy vehicle licence;
  • bus driver accreditation; and
  • operational requirements of bus operators.

These processes duplicate some requirements, impose unnecessary delays and do not have regard to the very strong commercial incentive for bus operators to ensure their drivers are fit and competent before they drive, and on an ongoing basis.

Current status

A proposal will be developed by regulators and the Department, in conjunction with the bus industry, to simplify these arrangements and remove red tape without compromising safety.
