Individuals and businesses are prevented from accessing property valuation information on the publicly-funded Landata website that is available to government officials and (selectively) to researchers. Valuation data on improved and unimproved capital values are collected by the SRO and councils for the principal purpose of calculating tax liabilities. However, this data could also help individuals and businesses to make better informed purchasing and location decisions, and understand the context for changes in property valuation.
Such data are published in NSW and Queensland. It is possible to provide public access to public data at low cost while addressing data privacy concerns as a practical matter (for example by excluding commercially sensitive information such as rents and outgoings, from any data that are published).
Land Victoria is currently considering access arrangements for valuation data.
